Star Trek Animated Series To Premiere

CBS All Access has given a two-season order for a new half-hour animated Star Trek comedy series, titled Star Trek: Lower Decks. This will be the streaming service's first animated project.
The series will be spearheaded by Rick and Morty head writer Mike McMahan, who is a longtime Star Trek fan and will serve as executive producer.
'Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: "I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end."' Said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. 'He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trek episode, and that’s his secret sauce: He writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of "Trek" to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.'
This is the first animated series to be greenlit at CBS All Access, which in August ordered a new drama centered on Patrick Stewart's iconic character, Jean-Luc Picard. Currently, the streaming service is home to Star Trek: Discovery, which launches its sophomore season on Thursday, 17 January, and is currently rolling out four Star Trek: Discovery shorts, titled 'Star Trek: Short Treks,' as a lead-up to Discovery's return.

Yet Another Trek Series In The Pipeline

A fourth Star Trek series is currently in development for addition to the CBS All Access Trek line up. The internet is abuzz with word that actress Michelle Yeoh is in talks to star in a Discovery spin-off featuring her character: Empress Georgiou.

As of now, Yeoh is simply in talks with the streaming network and there is no evidence a series has actually been green lit or moved into any stage of development. As a fan, it might be best to exercise cautious optimism while waiting for news on this potential project, especially when an actor like Yeoh is involved. Rumour has it that the untitled spin-off will involve Section 31.

Orville Returns

For fans of Seth MacFarlane’s adaptation of Star Trek, the second season of ‘The Orville’will premiere on Fox on 30 December.  Although not strictly 'Trek,' many fans have taken a shine to MacFarlane's new SciFi series.
